What Is Defensive Driving?

You have probably heard the term “defensive driving,” but what does it actually mean?

In simple terms, defensive driving means staying alert, being aware of your surroundings, and anticipating the actions of other drivers before a problem happens. It is the idea that safe drivers do more than just follow traffic laws. They actively try to avoid dangerous situations before an accident occurs.

Unfortunately, with distracted driving becoming more common, defensive driving is more important now than ever.

Why Defensive Driving Matters

Every day, we see drivers looking at their phones, speeding through traffic, following too closely, or simply not paying attention. Even if you are driving carefully, you cannot assume everyone around you is doing the same.

Louisiana law expects drivers to take reasonable steps to avoid accidents whenever possible. In some situations, a driver may still share responsibility for a crash if they had an opportunity to avoid the collision but failed to react reasonably.  This is sometimes referred to as “the last clear chance doctrine.”

That is one reason defensive driving matters. Staying alert and anticipating problems can help reduce the chances of a serious accident.

The Five Principles of Defensive Driving

One well-known defensive driving program, the Smith System, outlines five key principles that are still widely taught today:

  • Aim High: Keep your focus on the road ahead and avoid fixating only on the vehicle directly in front of you.
  • See the Big Picture: Stay aware of your surroundings, including nearby vehicles, intersections, pedestrians, and traffic patterns.
  • Keep Your Eyes Moving: Avoid getting too comfortable or distracted while driving. Continually scanning the road helps drivers stay alert.
  • Leave Yourself an Out: Try not to get boxed in by surrounding traffic. Anticipate what other drivers may do and leave yourself room to react.
  • Make Sure Other Drivers See You: Do not assume another driver notices you or plans to yield. Avoid lingering in blind spots whenever possible.

Safe Driving Can Prevent Serious Accidents

Defensive driving cannot eliminate every accident, but it can significantly reduce the risk of being involved in one.

At Flattmann Law, we regularly see how quickly distracted driving, aggressive driving, and simple inattention can lead to serious crashes throughout Covington, Mandeville, Slidell, Hammond, and across the Northshore.
