Distracted Driving: It Only Takes a Few Seconds

Distracted driving has become one of the biggest dangers on Louisiana roads.

According to national traffic safety studies, distracted driving contributes to thousands of serious and fatal crashes every year. In fact, approximately nine people are killed each day in the United States in crashes involving distracted drivers.

Teen drivers are especially at risk. Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of death for teenagers in the United States, and distracted driving plays a major role in many of those crashes.

The scary part is that distracted driving is not limited to texting. Most drivers have probably engaged in some form of distracted driving without even realizing it.

The Three Types of Distracted Driving

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), distracted driving generally falls into three categories:

  • Visual distractions: Taking your eyes off the road
  • Manual distractions: Taking your hands off the wheel
  • Cognitive distractions: Taking your mind off driving

Texting while driving is especially dangerous because it involves all three at the same time.

But distractions can happen in many different ways. Looking at GPS directions, reaching for something in the car, eating while driving, adjusting music, talking on the phone, or turning around to deal with kids in the back seat can all take your focus away from driving.

We Have All Been Guilty of It

Most people can probably think of a moment where they became distracted behind the wheel.

Maybe the phone rings on the passenger seat, so you glance down to see who is calling. Then you answer the phone, start searching for a pen, or focus more on the conversation than the road ahead.

Those few seconds may not seem like much, but serious accidents can happen incredibly fast.

Tips for Reducing Distracted Driving

There is no perfect solution, but small habits can make a big difference:

  • Put your phone on “Do Not Disturb” or airplane mode while driving
  • Connect your phone through hands-free features when possible
  • Let a passenger handle calls or messages
  • Keep your attention on the road, even during short trips
  • Ask your kids to help remind you to stay focused while driving
